I am sorry to inform you that stalwart of Barrow Chess Club, Derek Miller, died a couple of weeks ago.
He had been suffering from cancer and had undergone treatment for a few years.
Derek was an extremely popular member of the club and had been a member of Barrow Chess Club for 30 years.
He would turn out in all weathers and play for the Barrow teams in the Cumbrian League whenever requested.
There is a lengthy obituary by the Chairman of Barrow Chess Club, Dave Cole, on the Barrow Chess Club website.
There are also links on the Cumbria Chess Association home page.
He was a true gentleman and will be sorely missed.

Never a strong player (though he had a few scalps in his time nonetheless) but above all a genuinely nice guy.
