Very sad news. I never played Dave but met him many times around 30 years ago, mainly at Derbyshire county matches. As Mike notes in the obituary, he was a colourful character in more ways than one and I always enjoyed his banter. He was a master of genial bombast tempered by humble self-deprecation. Example (referring to some dubious opening line): "Ah yes, I sometimes play that against weaker players. You, of course, will have no need for such openings". Followed by: "I really don't know why I'm in the county team this season with my abysmally low rating".
